Warren Rosar

Dossier
Warren Vincent "Buddy" Rosar (July 3, 1914 – March 13, 1994) was an American catcher in Major League Baseball who played 13 seasons from 1939 to 1951. He batted and threw right-handed. Rosar broke in with the New York Yankees (1939–1942), then played for the Cleveland Indians (1943–1944), Philadelphia Athletics (1945–1949), and Boston Red Sox (1950–1951). Signed by the Yankees as an amateur free agent, he was a member of the 1941 World Series championship team. Over 988 games he compiled a .261 batting average with 836 hits, 18 home runs, and 367 runs batted in. Rosar was selected to five All-Star teams (1942, 1943, 1946, 1947, 1948) and was known primarily for his defense, retiring with a .992 career fielding percentage, the highest for a catcher at the time. He led American League catchers in fielding percentage four times, set a record for consecutive errorless games by a catcher, and his caught-stealing rate ranked among the highest in history. He caught no-hitters thrown by Dick Fowler in 1945 and Bill McCahan in 1947, and on July 19, 1940 he hit for the cycle. His career spanned the pre-integration and World War II eras.
