Dorrel Norman Elvert "Whitey" Herzog was born on November 9, 1931, in New Athens, Illinois. He made his major league debut as an outfielder with the Washington Senators in 1956, playing through 1963. After his playing days, Herzog worked as a scout and farm system director, contributing to the New York Mets' 1969 World Series title. As a manager, he guided the Kansas City Royals to three consecutive playoff appearances from 1976 to 1978, then led the St. Louis Cardinals to three World Series appearances, winning the 1982 championship over the Milwaukee Brewers. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2010.
