Willie Crawford

Dossier

Willie Murphy Crawford (September 7, 1946 – August 27, 2004) was a left-handed outfielder who spent the majority of his major league career with the Los Angeles Dodgers (1964–1975), also playing for the St. Louis Cardinals, Houston Astros, and Oakland Athletics in 1976–1977. Born in Los Angeles, Crawford was an All-City selection in both football and baseball at Fremont High School and was clocked at 9.7 seconds in the 100-yard dash. Al Campanis signed him for $100,000 in 1964; under the Bonus Rule, Crawford went straight to the Dodgers' major league roster. Defensively, he played shallow to suppress Texas Leaguers, possessed a strong arm, and used his speed to track deep fly balls.
