William Henry "Wee Willie" Keeler (1872–1923) closed his big-league career as a New York Yankee outfielder, the diminutive left-handed slap hitter whose advice to younger players — "hit 'em where they ain't" — outlasted his playing days by roughly a century. Standing five-foot-four and barely 140 pounds, he choked up on a 30-inch bat and consistently posted batting averages in the .350 range during his peak Baltimore and Brooklyn years. The E90-1 American Caramel "horizontal throwing" pose belongs to the foundational 1909–1911 caramel-card run that produced the era's marquee confectionery issues, depicting Keeler in a horizontal-format action shot rather than the more common portrait orientation. He retired with 2,932 hits and a 44-game hitting streak from 1897 that stood as the National League standard for eighty-one years. He died on New Year's Day 1923 in his native Brooklyn at age fifty. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1939.
