Frederick Douglass "Fritz" Pollard was a professional football player and coach born in Chicago on January 27, 1894. He attended Lane Tech High School before studying chemistry at Brown University, where he played halfback and helped the team reach the 1916 Rose Bowl. Pollard and Bobby Marshall entered the NFL in 1920 as the league's first two African-American players. In 1921, Pollard became the first African-American head coach in NFL history. He later played quarterback for the Hammond Pros in 1923, recognized as the first Black quarterback in league history.
