Alan Ameche

Alan Ameche, nicknamed "the Iron Horse" or simply "the Horse," was an American professional football fullback who lived from June 1, 1933, to August 8, 1988. Born in Kenosha, Wisconsin, as Lino Dante Amici to Italian immigrant parents who had arrived in the late 1920s, he spent part of his childhood in Italy before the family returned to Kenosha, where he attended Bradford High School. He was a cousin of actor brothers Don and Jim Ameche.

Ameche played college football for the Wisconsin Badgers, earning unanimous All-America honors and winning the Heisman Trophy during his senior season in 1954. He then spent six seasons as a fullback with the Baltimore Colts of the National Football League, and was elected to the Pro Bowl in each of his first four seasons. He is often remembered for scoring the winning touchdown in overtime in the 1958 NFL Championship Game against the New York Giants, a contest labeled "The Greatest Game Ever Played."

After his playing career, Ameche went into the restaurant business. With his former Colts teammate Gino Marchetti, he founded the Gino's Hamburgers chain, and he also founded the Baltimore-based Ameche's Drive-in restaurants.
