Dossier

Alexandre Dimitri Shibicky (May 19, 1914 – July 9, 2005) was a Canadian ice hockey forward who played for the New York Rangers from 1935 to 1946. He is credited as the first player to use a slapshot in NHL play, a technique he developed in practice from teammate Fred "Bun" Cook during the 1935–36 season and deployed in a game in 1937. Shibicky was part of the Rangers' Stanley Cup championship team in 1940 and served as vice-president of the first incarnation of the NHL Players' Association. He also served three years in the Canadian Forces during the Second World War.
