Andy Russell

Charles Andrew Russell (October 29, 1941 – March 1, 2024) was an American professional football player who spent his entire 12-year career as a linebacker for the Pittsburgh Steelers of the National Football League. Born in Detroit, Michigan, Russell moved frequently as a child—living in Chicago and New York—because his father worked as an executive with the Monsanto chemical company. The family settled in Ladue, a suburb of St. Louis, when Russell was a seventh grader. He grew up wanting to be a businessman.

Russell attended Ladue High School, where he played football and basketball. Nicknamed "the Horse" for his power, he was known for his use of the stiff-arm as a runner. In a 1958 game played on Halloween, he scored five touchdowns as a fullback, part of a season in which he tallied 121 points for an undefeated team that won its league title. He also ran track, once setting a low hurdles record. As a senior, Russell was named an All-American by The Sporting News and earned first-team all-state honors. He graduated in 1959.
