Art Donovan

Arthur James "Fatso" Donovan Jr. (June 5, 1924 – August 4, 2013) was an American professional football player who played defensive tackle in the National Football League. He suited up for three NFL teams, primarily the Baltimore Colts, and played his college football for the Boston College Eagles.

Donovan was born in the Bronx, the son of Arthur Donovan Sr., a boxing referee, and the grandson of Professor Mike Donovan, the world middleweight boxing champion of the 1870s. He attended Mount Saint Michael Academy in the Bronx. In 1942 he received a scholarship to the University of Notre Dame but left after one semester following the outbreak of war, enlisting in the United States Marine Corps in April 1943.

He served four years, spending much of that time in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. Donovan took part in some of the conflict's fiercest engagements, including the Battle of Luzon and the Battle of Iwo Jima. He served as an ammunition loader on a 40mm gun aboard the aircraft carrier USS San Jacinto and as a member of the 3rd Marine Division, earning citations that included the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal.

Donovan was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1968.
