Dossier

Austin George Carr, born March 10, 1948, is an American former professional basketball player and commentator. A 6-foot-4-inch, 200-pound shooting guard, he played for the Cleveland Cavaliers, Dallas Mavericks, and Washington Bullets of the National Basketball Association.

Carr grew up in Washington, D.C., where he attended Holy Redeemer School and later Mackin Catholic High School. At Mackin he teamed with All-City guard Tom Little, who earned national All-American recognition before starring at the University of Seattle. As a junior, Carr scored 475 points in 24 games and was named All Met. During his senior All Met season he scored 600 points and, alongside Sterling Savoy, led the Paul Furlong–coached Trojans to the Catholic League title over DeMatha. He was named a Parade All-American among a 1967 senior class that also included Artis Gilmore, Howard Porter, Jim McDaniels, and Curtis Rowe, all of whom became major college stars.

In college, Carr was a highly recruited player for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, where he won several national awards. He went on to a professional career in the NBA spanning Cleveland, Dallas, and Washington, and later worked as a commentator. Among Cleveland basketball fans, he is known as "Mr. Cavalier."
