Bailey Howell

Bailey E. Howell, born January 20, 1937, in Middleton, Tennessee, is an American former professional basketball player. The son of Walter Howell, a mail carrier, and Martha Howell, a teacher, he was one of three siblings.

Howell played for Middleton High School from 1953 to 1955, scoring 1,187 career points, which was then the Tennessee high school record. He was selected all-conference each season, All-State in his junior and senior seasons, and All-American as a senior in 1955, when he averaged 31.2 points per game. He was recruited by major programs including Memphis State, Mississippi, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, and Kentucky, and chose to attend Mississippi State, where he played college basketball.

Howell went on to play 12 seasons in the National Basketball Association. A six-time NBA All-Star and two-time NBA champion, he was known as "Buckshot" for his ability to score in the paint, thriving on second-effort plays close to the basket.

He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1997.
