Bernie Fryer

Bernie W. Fryer, born December 25, 1949, was a professional basketball player and longtime NBA referee. He attended Port Angeles High School in Port Angeles, Washington, where he played football and basketball and was named an All-American in both sports during his junior and senior seasons. He went on to Brigham Young University, graduating in 1972. At BYU he played basketball and was selected to the All-Western Athletic Conference team from 1970 to 1972, leading the Cougars in scoring in 1971 at 19.2 points per game to help the team win the WAC championship.

The Phoenix Suns selected Fryer in the seventh round of the 1972 NBA draft, but he never played for them. He made his NBA debut with the Portland Trail Blazers in 1973, appearing in 80 games during the 1973–74 season and earning a place on the All-Rookie Second Team after averaging 7.0 points and 3.5 assists per game. He played in the NBA and the American Basketball Association from 1973 to 1975.

Fryer later served as an NBA referee from 1978 to 2007. In July 2008 he became Vice President and Director of Officials for the National Basketball Association.
