Dossier

Dagoberto "Bert" Campaneris Blanco, born March 9, 1942, was a Cuban American professional baseball shortstop who played in Major League Baseball for four American League teams, primarily the Kansas City and Oakland Athletics. Nicknamed "Bert" or "Campy," he was one of the mainstays of the Athletics' championship teams from 1972 to 1974. He holds the Athletics franchise records for career games played (1,795), hits (1,882), and at bats (7,180).

Campaneris led the American League in stolen bases six times between 1965 and 1972 and retired with the seventh-most stolen bases in MLB history, totaling 649. Though he played mainly at shortstop, he appeared at every position over the course of his career, including designated hitter, with one appearance each at pitcher, catcher, first base, and right field. He led the league in putouts three times. His career totals at shortstop place him among the all-time MLB leaders in games played, ranking 14th with 2,097, and in double plays, ranking 20th with 1,186.

Campaneris grew up in Matanzas, Cuba, near his second cousin Jose Cardenal, who also went on to play in the major leagues. In 2019, Campaneris was inducted into the Athletics Hall of Fame.
