Bert Olmstead

Murray Albert Olmstead (September 4, 1926 – November 16, 2015) was a Canadian professional ice hockey player who played left wing in the National Hockey League for thirteen seasons. Born in Sceptre, Olmstead began his career with the Chicago Black Hawks in 1949. In December 1950 he was traded to the Montreal Canadiens via Detroit, and it was in Montreal that he recorded his best statistical seasons. He led the league in assists in 1954–55 with 48, then set a league record the following season with 56. During these years he frequently skated on Montreal's top line alongside Jean Beliveau and Bernie Geoffrion.

Olmstead was claimed by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 1958 NHL Intra-League Draft and played there until his retirement in 1962. He appeared in the Stanley Cup Final in eleven of his fourteen NHL seasons, winning the championship five times — four with Montreal, in 1953, 1956, 1957, and 1958, and once with Toronto, in 1962, his final season. After retiring as a player, he served as coach of the expansion Oakland Seals during the 1967–68 season. Olmstead was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1985.
