Bill Barnes

William F. Barnes (1917–2009) played college football at the University of Tennessee under head coach Robert Neyland, including the 1939 squad that completed the regular season without surrendering a point before falling to USC in the Rose Bowl. Barnes served in World War II with the Alamo Scouts, earning a Silver Star, two Bronze Stars, and the Legion of Merit, and left the military as a major. He later joined UCLA's staff in 1950 and became head coach in 1958, compiling a 31–34–3 record through 1964. His 1960 and 1961 teams each won seven games, and the Bruins appeared in the 1962 Rose Bowl.
