Dossier

William Earl Bergey (February 9, 1945 – December 25, 2024) was an American professional football linebacker who played 12 seasons in the National Football League, most notably with the Philadelphia Eagles. Born in South Dayton, New York, he graduated from Pine Valley Central High School in 1964 and attended Arkansas State University, where he played under coach Bernie Ellender and earned All-American honors with the Arkansas State Indians. He has since been voted by fans the top player in Arkansas State history.

Bergey was selected by the Cincinnati Bengals in the 1969 NFL/AFL draft, the year before the AFL–NFL merger was completed, and continued with the Bengals after they entered the NFL through the 1973 season. He signed with the Eagles the following year and played seven seasons in Philadelphia before retiring in 1981. Over the course of his career he received five Pro Bowl selections and two first-team All-Pro selections, and he made an appearance in Super Bowl XV, which was his final professional game.

Bergey is an inductee of the Eagles Hall of Fame and the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame. He died on December 25, 2024.
