William Joseph Buckner (1949–2019) played first base and left field in Major League Baseball from 1969 through 1990, suiting up for five clubs — most prominently the Los Angeles Dodgers, Chicago Cubs, and Boston Red Sox. An outfielder with the Dodgers, he batted .314 during their 1974 pennant run before an ankle injury led to his trade to Chicago, where the Cubs converted him to first base. He won the National League batting title in 1980 at .324 and earned an All-Star selection in 1981 while leading the majors in doubles. He set a major league record for first basemen with 159 assists in 1982, then broke it with 161 in 1983.
