Bill Donovan, given name William Edward, known as "Wild Bill" (October 13, 1876 – December 9, 1923). He was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts and died in Forsyth, New York. He stood 5 feet 11 inches and weighed 190 pounds. He was a switch-hitter who threw right-handed. He debuted in the majors in 1898 and played his last big-league season in 1918, a stretch of 21 seasons, primarily with the Detroit Tigers of the American League. His full professional career, including the minor leagues, ran from 1897 through 1923. After his playing days he managed in the majors from 1915 through 1921. His card presence in this catalog spans the E103 Williams Caramels issue of 1910; the E254 Colgan's Chips chewing-gum issue produced from 1909 through 1912, a set notable for its broad coverage of major and minor league players; the E92 Croft's Candy issue of 1909-1910; the E93 Standard Caramel issue of 1910; and the T204 Ramly tobacco issue of 1909, distributed by the Mentor Cigarette Company and recognizable by its ornate gold-bordered frames. He is interred at Holy Cross Cemetery in Yeadon, Pennsylvania (Section 17 - Range 15 - Lot 12).
