Bill Durnan

William Ronald "Bill" Durnan (January 22, 1916 – October 31, 1972) was a Canadian professional ice hockey goaltender who played with the Montreal Canadiens of the National Hockey League between 1943 and 1950. He entered the NHL at the age of 27 and played only seven seasons. During that short career he won the Vezina Trophy, awarded for allowing the fewest goals against, six times, and was named to the First All-Star team as the league's best goaltender six times. He helped the Canadiens win the Stanley Cup twice. In 1948 he served as captain of the Canadiens, the last goaltender permitted to do so. In his final season Durnan suffered a severe laceration of the scalp but was sidelined only 12 days, returning for the playoffs. With the series all but lost, the Canadiens down 0–3 to the Rangers, he stepped away from the game. Durnan retired in 1950, citing the stress of playing professional hockey. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1964, and in 2017 he was named one of the "100 Greatest NHL Players" in history.
