Dossier

William Briley Greif (born April 25, 1950, in Austin, Texas) was a right-handed pitcher who appeared in Major League Baseball from 1971 to 1976. A graduate of John H. Reagan High School, he was selected by the Houston Astros in the third round of the 1968 draft. After a trade to San Diego, Greif spent the bulk of his career with the Padres, where his knuckle-curve made him a rotation fixture — he served as the team's Opening Day starter in 1974. He later pitched for the St. Louis Cardinals before being dealt to the Montreal Expos, finishing six seasons in the majors.
