Dossier

Bill Quackenbush was a Canadian defenceman who played 14 seasons in the NHL with the Detroit Red Wings and Boston Bruins. An elite offensive defenceman, he was named to the NHL All-Star team five times and appeared in eight All-Star games. In 1948–49, he played the entire season without a penalty — part of a streak of 131 consecutive penalty-free games — earning him the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy, making him the first defenceman to win the award. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1976. After retiring, he spent 18 years coaching at Princeton University, winning eight Ivy League Championships with the men's golf team.
