Bill Turner played college basketball for the Indiana Hoosiers under head coach Bob Knight, winning an NCAA championship in 1981. Regarded as having exceptional potential, Turner entered his senior season projected as a top NBA draft prospect. In July 1981, he was paralyzed from the chest down in a car accident, ending his playing career. He remained with Indiana as a team captain during the 1981–82 season. The Boston Celtics selected him as the final pick of the 1982 NBA draft. Turner later played wheelchair basketball for three years before becoming a motivational speaker. He is a member of the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame and the Indiana University Athletics Hall of Fame.
