Dossier

William Richard Cox (August 29, 1919 – March 30, 1978) was a professional baseball third baseman and shortstop who played for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Brooklyn Dodgers, and Baltimore Orioles. Born in Newport, Pennsylvania, Cox was regarded as one of the top fielding third basemen of his era, appearing in three World Series with the Brooklyn Dodgers. Hall of Fame third baseman George Kell remarked that he never dreamed third base could be played with such artistry until watching Cox in the 1952 World Series. Cox began his professional career with the Class-B Harrisburg Senators in 1940.
