Dossier

Robert Edward Montgomery, known as "Monty," was a catcher and occasional first baseman who spent his entire ten-year Major League Baseball career with the Boston Red Sox from 1970 to 1979. Born in Nashville, Tennessee, on April 16, 1944, he signed with Boston as an amateur free agent in 1962 and worked through seven minor league affiliates before reaching the majors. With the Red Sox, Montgomery served as the backup catcher behind Carlton Fisk. He is noted as the last major league player to bat without wearing a batting helmet, playing his final game on September 9, 1979.
