Robert Allen Griese, born February 3, 1945, in Evansville, Indiana, was an American professional football quarterback who played 14 seasons with the Miami Dolphins of the American Football League and the National Football League. Before turning professional, he earned All-American honors at Purdue, where he played college football for the Boilermakers. The Dolphins selected him in the 1967 NFL/AFL draft.
Over his career, Griese led Miami to three consecutive Super Bowl appearances, then a record, and to back-to-back victories in Super Bowls VII and VIII. The first of those wins capped the Dolphins' 1972 campaign, an undefeated and untied season that remains the only one in NFL history.
Griese was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame and the Indiana Football Hall of Fame in 1984, and the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1990. After his playing career, he worked as a television commentator, calling NFL games for NBC Sports and college football for ESPN and ABC Sports. He is one of three Purdue quarterbacks to win a Super Bowl, alongside Len Dawson and Drew Brees.
