Bob Hayes

Robert Lee Hayes (December 20, 1942 – September 18, 2002), nicknamed "Bullet Bob," was an American sprinter and professional football player. A two-sport standout at Florida A&M University, where he competed in both track and field and football, Hayes first gained prominence as a sprinter. At the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, he won gold medals and set Olympic and world records, running the 100-meter dash in 10.0 seconds and anchoring the 4 × 100-meter relay team that recorded a world-record time of 39.0 seconds. He also held world records in the 60-yard, 70-yard, 100-yard, and 220-yard dashes.

Hayes then turned to professional football, playing split end in the National Football League for the Dallas Cowboys across 11 seasons. He remains the only athlete to win both an Olympic gold medal and a Super Bowl ring.

Hayes was enshrined in the Dallas Cowboys Ring of Honor in 2001 and was inducted into the United States Olympic Hall of Fame. In January 2009 he was selected for induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, becoming the second Olympic gold medalist to be so honored, after Jim Thorpe. Hayes died on September 18, 2002.
