Dossier

Robert Owen Klein (born July 27, 1947) played tight end for eleven seasons in the NFL with the Los Angeles Rams and San Diego Chargers. At USC, he was the starting tight end for the Trojans' 1967 national championship team and was selected 21st overall by the Rams in the 1969 NFL/AFL draft. His first two seasons were spent backing up Billy Truax, though he caught a touchdown in a 1969 playoff loss to the Vikings. When the Rams traded Truax after 1970, Klein took over the starting role, establishing himself as an effective blocker who also averaged 21 receptions per season from 1971 onward.
