Dossier

Robert John Murdoch (November 20, 1946 – August 3, 2023) was a Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman and coach. Born in Kirkland Lake, Ontario, a mining community in the Timiskaming District, he grew up in nearby Larder Lake and played organized hockey on outdoor rinks in an area that produced many NHL players. He attended the University of Waterloo, earning a double major in Mathematics and Physical Education, and captained the Waterloo Warriors varsity team in the OUAA. Undrafted, he played for the Canadian national team in 1968–69 and 1969–70, and was among the players affected by the National Team's withdrawal from the 1970 Ice Hockey World Championships.

Murdoch played 12 seasons in the National Hockey League as a defenceman for the Montreal Canadiens, Los Angeles Kings, Atlanta Flames and Calgary Flames. He went on to coach for 10 seasons in the NHL, serving as head coach of the Chicago Blackhawks and Winnipeg Jets, and as an assistant coach for the Calgary Flames and San Jose Sharks.
