Dossier

Robert Bruce St. Clair (February 18, 1931 – April 20, 2015) was an American professional football offensive tackle who played 11 seasons for the San Francisco 49ers of the National Football League. A native San Franciscan, he attended San Francisco Polytechnic High School, located across the street from Kezar Stadium, before playing college football for the University of San Francisco Dons. He was part of USF's undefeated 1951 team, which refused an invitation to the Orange Bowl after being asked to keep its black players, Ollie Matson and Burl Toler, from participating. With USF not fielding a team for the 1952 season, St. Clair finished his college career with the Tulsa Golden Hurricane.

The 49ers drafted St. Clair in the third round of the 1953 NFL draft, and he played his entire 11-year professional career with the team. Standing 6 ft 9 in (2.06 m) tall, he was known for both his intelligence and his towering size. Over the course of his career he earned All-Pro honors nine times. St. Clair is enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
