Harold Herman Brix — later known as Bruce Bennett — was born May 19, 1906, in Tacoma, Washington. He played college football at the University of Washington, appearing in the 1926 Rose Bowl, while also competing in track and field as a shot putter. At the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam he won the silver medal in the shot put, and he went on to claim four consecutive AAU shot put titles (1928–31), the NCAA title in 1927, and AAU indoor titles in 1930 and 1932. He set a world indoor record of 15.61 m in 1930. He later pursued a film and television acting career under the name Bruce Bennett.
