Dossier

Robert Thomas "Butch" Goring (born October 22, 1949) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player and coach. Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, to Bob and Audree, he was raised in the St. Boniface district of the city alongside a twin sister and two brothers. His father, Bob, worked as a welder for the Canadian National Railway. Of Scottish and British descent, Goring grew up a fan of the Detroit Red Wings and wore jersey number 9 in honour of Gordie Howe. He played his junior hockey in Winnipeg.

Goring went on to play 16 seasons in the National Hockey League, suiting up for the Los Angeles Kings, the New York Islanders and the Boston Bruins. With the Islanders he won the Stanley Cup four times and has been cited as a key figure of the team's dynasty.

After retiring as a player, Goring served as head coach of both the Bruins and the Islanders. Since 2023 he has worked as the Islanders' television colour commentator on MSG Network, as well as for select games on TNT, alongside play-by-play announcer Brendan Burke, with ice-level reporter Darren Pang joining the pair for select broadcasts.
