Carl Eller

Carl Lee Eller, an American former professional football player, played defensive end in the National Football League from 1964 through 1979. Born January 25, 1942, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, he grew up in a poor family and lost his father when he was young.

Eller attended Atkins High School, where he excelled in football and earned the nickname "Moose" while playing sandlot football around the same time. His high school team won the 1959 state football championship; among his teammates was Happy Hairston, who would go on to play in the National Basketball Association. Eller also competed on the track team in the discus and shot put.

He was recruited to the University of Minnesota by head coach Murray Warmath, on the recommendation of Bobby Bell, and played college football for the Minnesota Golden Gophers.

Eller was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2004.
