Dossier

Carl L. Garrett (August 31, 1947 – August 24, 2020) was an American professional football running back who began his professional career with the American Football League's Boston Patriots. In 1969 he caught 29 passes for 267 yards and two touchdowns, and carried the ball 137 times for 691 yards and five touchdowns, averaging over five yards per carry. That season he was named the Sporting News AFL Rookie of the Year and was selected to the AFL All-Star team.

Just prior to the 1971 season, Garrett was involved in a highly unusual transaction when the Patriots traded him to the Dallas Cowboys for running back Duane Thomas. Shortly after both players reported to their new teams, the trade was rescinded, and Thomas returned to the Cowboys while Garrett returned to the Patriots. The Cowboys went on to win the Super Bowl at the end of the 1971 season, with Duane Thomas serving as their leading rusher in the game.

Garrett later won Super Bowl XI with the 1976 Oakland Raiders, gaining 19 yards on four carries in that game.
