Carl Yastrzemski

Carl Michael Yastrzemski Sr., nicknamed "Yaz," is an American former professional baseball player born August 22, 1939. He played his entire 23-year Major League Baseball career with the Boston Red Sox. He began primarily as a left fielder and also appeared in 33 games at third base; later in his career he played mainly first base and designated hitter.

Yastrzemski was an 18-time All-Star and won seven Gold Gloves. A member of the 3,000-hit club, he was the first American League player in that club to also accumulate over 400 home runs. He ranks second on the all-time list for games played and third for total at-bats. He is the Red Sox's all-time leader in career RBIs, runs, hits, singles, doubles, total bases, and games played, and ranks third on the team list for home runs, behind Ted Williams and David Ortiz.

In 1967 Yastrzemski reached the peak of his career, leading the Red Sox to their first American League pennant in over two decades and being voted the 1967 American League Most Valuable Player. That same year he won the Triple Crown.

Yastrzemski was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1989, his first year of eligibility.
