Chester Marcol

Czesław Bolesław "Chester" Marcol, born October 24, 1949, is a Polish American former professional football player who served as a placekicker in the National Football League, primarily for the Green Bay Packers from 1972 to 1980. Marcol lived in Poland until the age of 14, when his father committed suicide and his mother sent the family to the United States, where Marcol became a U.S. citizen. He attended Imlay City High School in Michigan with little knowledge of English. He had developed strong kicking ability playing soccer in Poland, and a gym teacher who recognized his talent introduced him to football. At Hillsdale College he played for the Hillsdale Chargers, was named an NAIA All-American, and set the school record for longest field goal. Packers head coach Dan Devine selected Marcol in the second round, 34th overall, of the 1972 NFL draft. He scored 128 points in his rookie season, leading the league in scoring, and was named NFC Rookie of the Year—the only kicker to receive that honor—as well as an All-Pro. He was inducted into the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame in 1987.
