Chris Hanburger

Christian G. Hanburger Jr., born August 13, 1941, in Fort Bragg, North Carolina, was an American professional football player who played linebacker in the National Football League. He spent his entire 14-year career with the Washington Redskins, from 1965 through 1978.

Hanburger was the son of a U.S. Army colonel. He attended Hampton High School in Hampton, Virginia, where he was an All-State end. Eleven days after finishing high school, he enlisted in the Army, having no interest in college and not wishing to move to Alaska, where his father had been re-stationed. He served two years and had planned to pursue a career as an officer, but a serious eye-socket injury during a flag football game ended that plan.

Following his military service, Hanburger accepted a scholarship from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he played college football for the Tar Heels under coach Jim Hickey. From 1962 through 1964, he played on offense at center and on defense as a middle linebacker, where he called the defensive signals.

Hanburger was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2011.
