Claude Provost

Claude Joseph Antoine Provost (September 17, 1933 – April 17, 1984) was a Canadian professional ice hockey player. A right winger, he spent all 15 seasons of his National Hockey League career with the Montreal Canadiens. Over that span he won the Stanley Cup nine times, in 1956, 1957, 1958, 1959, 1960, 1965, 1966, 1968, and 1969. In the sixth game of the 1965 Stanley Cup semifinals, Provost scored the game-winning goal against Toronto in overtime.

In 1967-68 he became the first recipient of the Bill Masterton Trophy, awarded for perseverance. He was named to the NHL first all-star team in 1965 and appeared in eleven NHL All-Star Games, in 1956, 1957, 1958, 1959, 1960, 1961, 1962, 1963, 1964, 1966, and 1967 — the most appearances by any player not in the Hockey Hall of Fame. He also holds the NHL record for the earliest goal in a period, scored four seconds in.

Provost had three children; his son, Claude Provost Jr., is the owner and founder of a spa near the municipality of Bolton-Est, Quebec. He died of a heart attack during a vacation to Hallandale.
