Clay Kirby

Clayton Laws Kirby, Jr. (1948–1991) was a right-handed pitcher who spent parts of eight seasons in the major leagues with the San Diego Padres (1969–1973), Cincinnati Reds (1974–75), and Montreal Expos (1976). A Washington, D.C. native who attended Washington-Lee High School in Arlington, Virginia, Kirby was drafted by the Cardinals in 1966 before being claimed by the expansion Padres in October 1968. He debuted at age 20 on April 11, 1969, with the first batter he faced being Willie Mays. Despite leading the National League in losses that year with 20, he posted a 3.80 ERA across 35 starts and 215.1 innings. On July 21, 1970, he carried a no-hitter against the Mets into the ninth inning before being removed while trailing 1–0.
