Clyde Conner

Clyde Raymond Conner (August 4, 1884 – January 24, 1919) was an American college football player who later became a lawyer in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, and served as a United States Commissioner. Conner played as a tackle for the Ole Miss Rebels of the University of Mississippi and as a center for the Virginia Cavaliers of the University of Virginia. In a 21–0 Egg Bowl victory in 1902, a Memphis newspaper reported that Conner "plunged through the line at will." Playing for Virginia in 1903, he was selected All-Southern, and he earned All-Southern honors again in 1906 with Ole Miss. After his playing days, Conner established himself as a prominent attorney. He died at his home on January 24, 1919, of blood poisoning, which developed after an inverted hair was removed from his neck at a barber shop; no trouble resulted until the spot became irritated two days later.
