Dale Long

Richard Dale Long (February 6, 1926 – January 27, 1991) was a left-handed first baseman who appeared in Major League Baseball from 1951 to 1963 with the Pittsburgh Pirates, St. Louis Browns, Chicago Cubs, San Francisco Giants, New York Yankees, and Washington Senators. Listed at 6-foot-4 and 205 pounds, Long grew up in Springfield, Missouri, and turned down a football offer from the Green Bay Packers to pursue baseball. In 1956 he set an MLB record by hitting a home run in eight consecutive games. Two years later he became the first left-handed-throwing catcher in the majors since Jiggs Donahue in 1902.
