Dossier

David John Casper, nicknamed "the Ghost," is an American former professional football player born February 2, 1952. He played tight end in the National Football League, primarily with the Oakland Raiders.

Casper spent his first three years of high school at St. Edward Central Catholic High School in Elgin, Illinois, before finishing his senior season at Chilton High School in Chilton, Wisconsin, 35 miles south of Green Bay. He was a member of the 1969 Chilton team that outscored its opponents 363–0 across eight games; the small-town squad was ranked eighth in the state behind the largest schools, in an era with no playoff system.

He played college football at the University of Notre Dame, earning Honorable Mention All-America as a tackle for the Fighting Irish in 1972. In 1973, he was an All-American on the National Championship team and was named the Notre Dame Offensive MVP as a tight end. Over his college career he recorded 21 receptions for 335 yards and four touchdowns, and earned his bachelor's degree there.

Casper has been inducted into both the College Football Hall of Fame, in 2012, and the Pro Football Hall of Fame, in 2002.
