Dave Cowens

David William Cowens, born October 25, 1948, in Newport, Kentucky, is an American former professional basketball player and NBA head coach. Standing 6 feet 9 inches, he played center and occasionally power forward, spending most of his playing career with the Boston Celtics. Cowens was named NBA Rookie of the Year in 1971 and NBA Most Valuable Player in 1973. He won NBA championships with the Celtics in 1974 and 1976. Considered an undersized center, he compensated for his height with hustle and athleticism. After his playing days he held coaching positions in the NBA, CBA, and WNBA. Cowens was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1991, and was named to both the NBA 50th Anniversary All-Time Team and the NBA 75th Anniversary Team.
