Dossier

David Vance Osborn (born March 18, 1943) is an American former professional football player who played running back for twelve seasons in the National Football League with the Minnesota Vikings and Green Bay Packers. He played college football for the North Dakota Fighting Sioux from 1962 to 1964, excelling at football alongside track and field and earning All-Conference honors. He remains the only player in program history to have his number retired, and he was inducted into the university Hall of Fame in 1977.

The Vikings selected Osborn in the 13th round of the 1965 NFL draft, with the 176th overall pick; his first contract was worth $9,000. As a rookie in 1965, he carried the ball 20 times for 106 yards and two touchdowns, added one reception for four yards, and returned 18 kickoffs for 422 yards. His role expanded the following season, when he ran 87 times for 344 yards and one touchdown, caught 15 passes for 141 yards and two touchdowns, and returned one kickoff for 19 yards. In 1967, his third season, Osborn reached career highs across several categories. He spent the bulk of his career with Minnesota before finishing with Green Bay, totaling twelve NFL seasons as a running back.
