Deacon Phillippe

Charles Louis "Deacon" Phillippe (May 23, 1872 – March 30, 1952) was born in Rural Retreat, Virginia. His professional career ran from 1899 through 1911, placing him squarely in the nineteenth-century professional ranks, and he is most closely identified with the Pittsburgh Pirates of the NL. After his major-league days ended in 1911, he continued in professional ball through 1913. He was listed at 180 pounds. He batted and threw right-handed. For collectors, his most recognized appearance is in the iconic T206 White Border tobacco set issued 1909-11 by the American Tobacco Company. His documented card checklist includes E90-2 Pittsburgh American Caramel, E93 Standard Caramel, and T206 White Border. He died on March 30, 1952 in Avalon, Pennsylvania and was interred at Allegheny County Memorial Park in Allison Park, Pennsylvania.
