Dossier

Delbert Martin Shofner (December 11, 1934 – March 11, 2020) was an American professional football player who played end and flanker for 11 seasons in the National Football League with the Los Angeles Rams and the New York Giants from 1957 to 1967. He played college football for the Baylor Bears, where he also competed in basketball, baseball, and as a sprinter. Shofner helped lead Baylor to a 13–7 victory over Tennessee in the 1957 Sugar Bowl and was voted the game's Most Valuable Player.

Shofner began his professional career in 1957 as a defensive back, playing in 12 games and starting 10, intercepting two passes and recovering a fumble. The following season he moved to offense as a split end and caught 51 passes for 1,097 yards and eight touchdowns across twelve games, leading the league in receiving yards and in yards per game at 91.4. That performance earned him his first Pro Bowl selection and first-team All-Pro honors. He continued the next season with 47 receptions for 936 yards, the second-highest total in the league, and seven touchdowns, earning another Pro Bowl selection.
