Dossier

Richard Paul Anderson (born February 10, 1946) is an American former professional football player who played safety for the Miami Dolphins of the American Football League and National Football League across nine seasons during the 1960s and 1970s. He played college football for the Colorado Buffaloes, where he was recognized as a consensus All-American. Selected in the third round of the 1968 NFL/AFL draft, Anderson spent his entire professional career with the Dolphins.

He made an immediate impact as a rookie in 1968, recording 8 interceptions, the first of three seasons in which he intercepted at least 8 passes. That performance earned him a share of the AP AFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Award alongside George Atkinson. In 1970, the Dolphins drafted safety Jake Scott, and the two formed one of the era's most effective safety tandems as part of Miami's "No-Name Defense." Anderson won back-to-back championships with the team during the 1972 "perfect season" and again in 1973. During the 1973 championship run, he was voted the NFL Defensive Player of the Year.
