Dick McGuire

Richard Joseph McGuire (January 26, 1926 – February 3, 2010) was an American professional basketball player and coach, one of the premier guards of the 1950s. He played 11 seasons in the NBA from 1949 to 1960, eight with the New York Knicks and three with the Detroit Pistons. In his rookie season he led the league in assists with a then-record 386, and he ranked among the league's top ten playmakers in ten of his 11 seasons. McGuire was named an NBA All-Star seven times (1951, 1952, 1954–56, 1958, 1959) and earned All-NBA Second Team honors in 1951.

McGuire became player-coach for the Pistons in his final season (1959–60) and continued coaching them until 1963. He later coached the Knicks for three seasons beginning in 1965, compiling a 197–260 record across his coaching career. He remained with the organization as a senior consultant for the Knicks, a role he held when he died on February 3, 2010, of a ruptured aortic aneurysm at age 84.

His brother Al McGuire was also a prominent figure in basketball, coaching Marquette University to the 1977 NCAA championship. The Knicks retired McGuire's number 15 jersey in 1992, and he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1993. Dave Cobert portrayed him in the 2023 film Sweetwater.
