Dossier

Richard Darrell Shatto (February 5, 1933 – February 4, 2003) was a professional Canadian football player who spent his entire career with the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League. He played collegiately for the University of Kentucky Wildcats and was selected in the 15th round of the 1956 NFL draft by the Los Angeles Rams, but signed instead with the Argonauts. His playing career in Toronto ran twelve seasons, from 1954 to 1965.

Shatto was one of the most productive players in the CFL, accomplishing it for a team that reached the playoffs only three times during his tenure, in 1955, 1960, and 1961, and finished last in its conference eight times. He retired holding the league record for most career touchdowns with 91, comprising 39 rushing and 52 receiving; that total ranks eighth highest in league history.

After his playing days ended, Shatto served as the Argonauts' general manager. His number 22 is one of only four jerseys the club has retired. He was inducted into the Ontario Sports Hall of Fame in 1997.
