Dick Van Arsdale

Richard Albert Van Arsdale (February 22, 1943 – December 16, 2024) was an American professional basketball player in the National Basketball Association. Born in Indianapolis alongside his identical twin brother, Tom, he attended Emmerich Manual High School in that city. In 1961 the brothers were jointly awarded the Indiana Mr. Basketball award and the Trester Award for Mental Attitude. Van Arsdale went on to play college basketball for the Indiana Hoosiers, again alongside Tom.

The New York Knicks selected him in the second round of the 1965 NBA draft. He was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team and played three seasons for the Knicks. In 1968 he was taken by the Phoenix Suns with their first pick of the NBA expansion draft, becoming known as "the Original Sun." He was selected an All-Star in each of his first three seasons with Phoenix, earning three NBA All-Star selections in all.

After his playing career, Van Arsdale remained with the Suns as an interim coach, an executive, and a color commentator. The franchise retired his No. 5. He died on December 16, 2024.
