Dossier

Donald Edward Gullett (January 6, 1951 – February 14, 2024) was an American professional baseball player and coach who pitched left-handed in Major League Baseball from 1970 through 1978. Born in Lynn, Kentucky, he attended McKell High School in South Shore, where he was a three-sport athlete in baseball, football, and basketball. He began pitching in the eighth grade, and as a high school pitcher once threw a perfect game in which he struck out 20 of the 21 hitters he faced. He was equally accomplished in football, once scoring 72 points in a single game on 11 touchdowns and 6 extra points, and in his senior year was named all-state in baseball, football, and basketball.

Gullett spent the core of his career with the Cincinnati Reds, where he was part of the Big Red Machine that won four National League pennants and two World Series championships between 1970 and 1976. He later joined the New York Yankees and was a member of the teams that won consecutive World Series championships in 1977 and 1978.

After his playing days, Gullett returned to Cincinnati as the Reds' pitching coach, a role he held from 1993 to 2005. In 2002, he was inducted into the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame. He died on February 14, 2024.
